In this article I’ll share how you can grow a loyal and sustained fan base by working with the top experts in your niche.

They’re out there, and it’s not nearly as hard as you think to get them on your team.

Why do I need an expert?

Everyone wants entertaining, useful content. That’s what content marketing is all about.

But they also want access to great people. When you present a new idea or a new voice to your audience, your blog becomes a valuable source people will want to visit again and again. Bringing in expert voices rounds out your site and adds dimension.

Getting outside experts involved also validates your own expertise. When you can attract the best, people will see you as an expert in your own right.

Finally, there’s an often-overlooked benefit of working with experts. If you work well together, some may turn out to be strategic partners who can take your business places you never dreamed.

Experts can include:

• Authors, particularly those who have new books out
• People who frequently speak on relevant topics
• Bloggers who are creating exceptional content
• Practitioners working inside companies

A quick example

When I started Social Media Examiner back in October of 2009, I knew next to nothing about social media.

But I knew that if I could attract social media experts and share their knowledge, I could quickly grow a large following.

We opened our virtual doors with live video broadcasts. I interviewed top social media experts including Mari Smith, Chris Garrett, Denise Wakeman, and Jason Falls.

Many of these experts tweeted their involvement to their followers. Within just a few weeks, Technorati ranked us as one of the top small-business blogs in the world.

I saw the value of outside experts as a great source of content. The experts saw the value of being involved with something exciting.

How experts can help you create valuable content

Here are four ways to work with experts for content:

1. The trade show interview

A great way to get content from experts is via an on-location interview. And there’s no better place than a trade show. You’ll find lots of experts around your particular topic, and they’re often in the right frame of mind for a quick interview.

In this video I’m interviewing Scott Monty of Ford Motor Company at a major trade show.

Quick tip: Be sure to arrange the interview prior to the event so the expert is prepared.

2. The book interview

One of the best times to hit up experts is when they have a new book coming out.

The author is typically in promotional mode and seeking exposure for his or her book. And the book typically contains new ideas that your audience might be interested in.

When Seth Godin’s latest book was being published, I reached out to him and asked if there was any way I could help. I ended up interviewing him about Poke the Box and how he is transforming the book industry.

My audience found it fascinating, and Seth got what he wanted — to spread the word about the ideas in his book.

Quick tip: Record the interview and have it transcribed. This makes it easy to turn the interview into an article.

3. The guest post

If you have access to an audience that experts want to be in front of, consider inviting them to write a guest post for your blog.

We use lots of expert guest-written content on Social Media Examiner, and of course, so do many of your favorite blogs.

For example, here on Copyblogger, Brian Clark approached copywriter Roberta Rosenberg to write a series of landing page makeovers, which quickly became a valued resource on the site. While readers may not have known Roberta’s name before she wrote the series, her expert advice and guidance clearly shone through in the series.

Quick tip: Experts are busy, and writing a post (or a series of posts) is a big commitment. Be sure you can make a solid case why they should consider writing for your site. And if your audience is still small, “exposure” is not usually a solid case.

If you can’t make that case yet and your expert is a blogger, ask if you can write a guest post for their site. You’ll have to put some work in, but the benefits can be substantial.

4. The TV show

If you’ve got a charismatic expert who’s willing to enter a true partnership, consider inviting an expert to host an online TV show.

We asked Mari Smith (who happened to be local for us) to be the host of our Social Media Examiner TV series. She regularly provided hot tips on her area of expertise, Facebook marketing.

Here is an example of one of our episodes. As you can see, we combined Mari’s great stage presence with our own production values to create a high-quality viewing experience.

Quick tip: Again, this is a big commitment, so do everything you can to make the experience fun and easy for your expert. Come up with a regular show plan, and do as much of the legwork as possible.

Almost all niche market entrepreneurs – from those in the dog training niche to Internet marketers and everything in between – now rely on professional grade PLR, also known as private label rights videos to help them add value to their products, which translates into higher price points and bigger profits.

Look at any of the old, traditional sales letters online for digital download products and you’ll find nothing more than a PDF file and perhaps a few extra PDF bonus files. After that got stale, niche marketers started adding audio interviews to the mix. Internet Marketing Plr Videos

Design Hosting Internet Marketing Web

If you’ve begun researching internet marketing and work from home opportunities, you already realize that there are many different angles and approaches you can take. In fact, there are so many it can sometimes make your head swim!

Almost all of these approaches to internet marketing have one thing in common: They require that you build and maintain at least one Web site. That makes perfect sense: We are talking about internet marketing and online business, after all!

It might make sense, but some of us don’t know how to create a Web site. More to the point, some of us have no real desire to learn. We want to publish eBooks or promote products as affiliates or build some other kind of online business. We don’t want to learn how to speak to computers or Web browsers in their own language.

Fortunately, relatively new software technology enables people like us to build a Web site without really knowing what we’re doing. These tools are known by the techie acronym “WYSIWYG,” for “what you see is what you get.”

WYSIWYG programs do just what the name suggests: They allow you to build the Web site by showing you only the finished product, not all the underlying code (e.g., HTML, PHP, and other stuff you don’t really need to know). Design Hosting Internet Marketing Web

There are mainstream commercial programs such as Front Page and Dreamweaver you can buy, but they come with a couple of caveats. First, they’re expensive. And second, they can still have a steep enough learning curve to be daunting for those of us with absolutely no technical skills or inclinations.

The first problem is nicely answered by an open source WYSIWYG editor called Nvu (pronounced “N-View”). Nvu is based on the Mozilla platform and is free to download and use. You can’t beat the price.

Nvu is fairly easy to use, but its learning curve will still be a little steep for true technical illiterates (such as me).

When I finally admitted that I could no longer avoid learning how to build a Web site, I went to Google and typed in something like “easiest way to build a Web site.” One of the search results that came up was for a program called BlueVoda.

BlueVoda looks a lot like a word processing program. In general, it’s more intuitive and easy to use than Word. You click on a button to create boxes for text or images. You put your text or images in those boxes. You move them around until you like how they look. You preview the result in your browser. You click on the “publish” button. You’re done. Every writer and marketer could learn a thing or two from Don Draper — the anti-hero of AMC’s hit series Mad Men, which is set in the swinging 60s world of advertising.

Born from dirt, Don is a verbal Superman who uses his unique outlook on life to articulate his way into influence, money, and creative success.

Isn’t that the recipe all us marketing raconteurs are looking for?

Don is marble-handsome, but his steely stare and flawless assembly of words are what allow him to own every conversation with an eyebrow’s worth of effort.

Learn to use your words as well as Don Draper, and you, too, can articulate your way into influence, money, and creative success.

Let’s start with some of Don’s thoughts, from advertising to what women truly want.

Advertising

Advertising is based on one thing: happiness. And do you know what happiness is? Happiness is the smell of a new car. It’s freedom from fear. It’s a billboard on the side of a road that screams with reassurance that whatever you’re doing is Okay. You are Okay.

Done well, advertising sends a whisper to your impulses — a primal wind at the back of your neck, suggesting where to go and what to do.

Flashy advertising works, but its half-life is dim. Make people feel something, especially happiness, and they will remember and act. Bonus points if your happiness solves their sadness.

Nostalgia

Nostalgia literally means the pain from an old wound. It’s a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone. This device isn’t a spaceship, it’s a time machine. It goes backwards, and forwards … it takes us to a place where we ache to go again. It’s not called the wheel, it’s called the carousel. It lets us travel the way a child travels — around and around, and back home again, to a place where we know we are loved.

We all long for the way we were. Even the most adventurous among us craves the sublime comfort of the familiar.

Many writers and marketers understand this human need, but Don tumbles the thought by reminding us that true nostalgia isn’t a deep longing for the past so much as an affectionate feeling for a future that feels like a friend.

Adaptability

If you don’t like the conversation, change it.

When Don’s firm, Sterling Cooper, loses their largest account — Lucky Strike Cigarettes — the partners and foot soldiers in the firm run around in circles.

Don turns the tables, proudly declaring his firm will only do business with those companies unwilling to put their consumers at risk. Not only does this save Sterling Cooper from being the laughing stock of Madison Avenue, it pushes them ahead of the trends.

Regret

When a man walks into a room, he brings his whole life with him. He has a million reasons for being anywhere; just ask him. If you listen, he’ll tell you how he got there. How he forgot where he was going, and that he woke up. If you listen, he’ll tell you about the time he thought he was an angel or dreamt of being perfect. And then he’ll smile with wisdom, content that he realized the world isn’t perfect. We’re flawed, because we want so much more. We’re ruined, because we get these things, and wish for what we had.

People tend to dilute their regret or justify previous behavior. We are all slaves to habit, most of the time. When writers stoke the fires that make us feel remorse or reprieve, we are willing to answer with our wallets.

Writing

Just so you know, the people who talk that way think that monkeys can do this. They take all this monkey crap and just stick it in a briefcase completely unaware that their success depends on something more than their shoeshine. You are the product. You — feeling something. That’s what sells. Not them. Not sex. They can’t do what we do, and they hate us for it.

Sex does sell, but it isn’t just the flesh. Sex also sells because of associated triggers; being loved, needed, wanted, satisfied. Great writers draw pictures with words, rendering memory permanent with a stroke of a key. It isn’t easy. Those writers who dig deepest strike the oil.

Creativity

Just think about it deeply, then forget it … then an idea will jump up in your face.

Any writer or creative type can relate to this.

How often have you struggled over the perfect sentence, argument, or string of dialogue? You can’t beat your muse into submission. Brilliance needs space to breathe.

Take a break from the unfinished page, and you will likely find that your idea has grown stronger in your mental absence.

Marketing

Big lightning bolt to the heart — you can’t eat, and you can’t work, and you run off and get married and make babies. The reason you haven’t felt it is because it doesn’t exist. It was invented by men like me, to sell nylons.

That was Draper at his most cynical, but I don’t think he believes a word he’s saying. It’s just his way to justify cruel behavior, carelessly waged against his wife.

Yet it’s amazing to view as a fly on the wall. Don always thinks like a marketer, even when he’s only selling to himself.

Our Desires

Jacqueline Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe. Women have feelings about these women because men do. Because we want both, they want to be both. It’s about how they want to be seen by us, their husbands, their boyfriends, their friends’ husbands. Here’s the idea, very simply. The bra is called ‘the Harlequin.’ In fit and form, it should be your very best. It comes in black. And white. Jackie. Marilyn. Same incredible fit, two different women. And the beauty of it is, it’s the same woman. Same model.

Our desires aren’t consistent, yet it’s the inconsistency that makes us human.

How can anyone want two entirely different things at the same time? It doesn’t matter; smart marketers understand that basic human nature doesn’t change, so they highlight a solution rather than digging for an answer.

Success

Success comes from standing out, not fitting in.

Look around at the people you admire most. Whether online or off, those truly blazing their own trails and creating freedom for themselves are marching to their own beat.

An echo is never as steady or strong as the original shout. Be unique, and do what you do better than anyone else. The world will hear you.

What Women Truly Want

Listen, I’m not here to tell you about Jesus. You already know about Jesus. He either lives in your heart or he doesn’t. Every woman wants choices, but in the end, none wants to be one of a hundred in a box. She’s unique. She makes the choices and she’s chosen him. She wants to tell the world he’s mine. He belongs to me, not you. She marks her man with her lips. He’s her possession. You’ve given the gift of total ownership.

Even when selling lipstick, Don knows what makes us tick. For a woman in the early 60‘s, it was knowing she could be the lingering memory inside her man’s mind. A dozen colors are great, but a woman would open her wallet for the promise of possession.

Don’s brilliance with words does nothing to keep him from weaving a thick web of compulsive lies and regular infidelity.

That’s what makes Draper interesting — he’s the type of guy who sets and baits his own trap, and steps in with both feet. 

Don’t follow all of Don’s examples. (I wouldn’t recommend the Don Draper Guide to a Satisfying Marriage, for example.) But embracing his advertising insights will make you a better writer and marketer, and help you articulate your way into influence, money, and creative success.
